Red string (红绳) is the most ancient Daoist protective amulet — woven from red silk and traditionally tied around a newborn's wrist or ankle at the start of life. The "Chi Sheng Qi Nian Sui Sui Ling Rui" (赤绳祈年·岁岁灵瑞) collection extends this tradition into 12 modern designs, each pairing the classical red cord with a specific Daoist protective element.
The Red String Tradition
Red has been the color of yang protection across all five-element systems for over three thousand years. In Daoist canon, red is associated with the Fire phase, the Vermilion Bird of the South, and the day-bright force that repels nocturnal yin influences. Red string is one of the few Daoist practices that crosses age and gender — worn by newborns at birth, by adults during their ben ming nian (本命年, zodiac year), by elders for longevity, and at every major life threshold. The cord itself is the talisman; the metal or stone center is its focus.

Adjustable Cord
No wrist sizing needed — these traditional cords adjust from 14cm to 24cm via the slip-knot closure. Suitable for newborns through adults. Pull both tassels apart to loosen, pull center loop to tighten.
How to Wear & Activation
Wear on the left wrist (yang side) — the traditional placement. Newborns wear at the ankle until walking, then transition to the wrist. Traditional activation: tie the cord on a child's man yue (满月, one-month) day, a birthday, or the first day of the lunar new year. For adults during ben ming nian, tie at the new moon of your zodiac year. Untie only when the cord naturally breaks — never cut it.
Care & Replacement
These are everyday-wear bracelets. The cord can be replaced when it shows wear; the metal or stone center element should outlast multiple cord changes. Wipe the center element with a soft dry cloth; cinnabar and Moyu jade should not be soaked. Tradition holds that a cord which breaks of its own accord has fulfilled its protective purpose — replace and continue the tradition.
Sourcing & Craftsmanship
Red silk cord is hand-braided in southern China using traditional Daoist red-cord patterns. 925 silver-gilt center elements are produced by a small workshop following Daoist consecration protocols. Cinnabar comes from natural Hunan and Guizhou ore deposits; Hetian Moyu jade from authenticated Xinjiang sources — no synthetic substitutes. Each bracelet ships in a small wooden box with a Daoist origin card.
